In order to enhance its community’s lives with open spaces and different experiences, Moreland City Council made a commitment to developing Edgars Creek, in Melbourne’s north, into an exciting and valuable destination for the local school and sports community.

At the heart of this redevelopment was a new sports field – a completely new project built from scratch on virgin ground.

The challenge? A little thing called winter.

Laying the groundwork

While Polytan supplied and laid a premium synthetic turf, Joslyn Group provided the groundwork.

The subgrade was low tolerance. To counter this, we brought in 20,000 cubic metres of fill and packed it under level one supervision to 98% standard compaction. We installed a geotech membrane underneath the crushed rock aggregate surfaces for drainage, which is absolutely crucial to the success and longevity of any project, while also preparing for the concrete paths, kerbs and new fencing.

The high winds and wintry conditions meant it was a challenge to get the surface down without it blowing away. We put all our effort and attention into getting the foundation below the ground right, so the people using the field have the best possible experience.

The site also needed to meet AFL and Cricket Australia certification; we passed with flying colours.

Kicking goals

Come hail, rain or shine, we delivered this project on budget and quicker than expected, so the kids at Edgars Creek Secondary College can start the school year kicking goals.
